Give a Child a Chance, and Watch What Happens
Sometimes potential does not need more instruction. It simply needs an opportunity.
A child does not always know what they are capable of.
They may never have tried speaking on a stage.
They may never have entered a competition.
They may never have built something of their own.
They may never have been asked to lead.
Until someone gives them a chance.
That first opportunity can reveal an ability that was waiting to be discovered.
Sometimes, the opportunity comes before the confidence.
Potential Needs a Beginning
We often expect children to become confident before giving them opportunities.
But confidence does not always come first.
A child may become confident because they were given the chance to try.
A simple invitation to participate can become a first step.
A chance to perform can reveal a talent.
A small responsibility can develop leadership.
An opportunity to create can uncover imagination.
What looks like a small opportunity to an adult can feel like a major moment to a child.
The First Chance May Not Be Perfect
When children get their first opportunity, they may make mistakes.
They may forget their lines.
Their project may not work.
They may feel nervous.
They may not perform as well as they hoped.
That is perfectly normal.
The purpose of an opportunity is not always to produce an immediate success.
Sometimes its greatest value is helping a child discover:
“I can try.”
And once a child learns to try, the next opportunity becomes easier.
Different Children Need Different Opportunities
Every child has their own strengths.
One may shine on a sports field.
Another may express themselves through art.
Someone else may enjoy science, music, writing, technology or problem-solving.
There is no single stage on which every child will shine.
That is why children need access to different experiences.
When we give them variety, we give them more chances to discover what excites them.
And sometimes, the ability we were looking for appears in a place we never expected.
An Opportunity Can Change a Direction
Think about a child who is asked to participate in a small school activity.
They volunteer.
They try something new.
They discover that they love it.
They practise.
They improve.
Months or years later, that small beginning may have become a meaningful skill or a remarkable achievement.
We may remember the final accomplishment.
But the journey may have started with something much simpler:
Someone said, “Why don't you give it a try?”
What Adults Can Do
Parents, teachers and mentors can create more opportunities by:
- Encouraging children to try unfamiliar activities.
- Giving them responsibilities appropriate to their age.
- Letting them share their ideas.
- Allowing them to take healthy risks and make mistakes.
- Introducing them to different fields and experiences.
- Supporting their interests without deciding their limits for them.
Children do not need every opportunity to become a success.
They simply need enough opportunities to discover where their strengths can grow.
A Chance Can Become an Achievement
Every remarkable achievement has a beginning.
Sometimes it begins with practice.
Sometimes with curiosity.
And sometimes, it begins with someone opening a door and giving a child the chance to walk through it.
At Children Book of Records, we believe children deserve opportunities to explore their abilities, challenge themselves and show what they can achieve.
Because we never know what is possible until a child gets the chance to try.
Give them the opportunity.
Let them discover the possibility.
